First Aid at Matandani

If an accident happens at school then the teacher or first aider are called to help but imagine being in a school where no-one knows the correct procedures for even some of the simplest of accidents.

Teaching first aid to the teachers at Matandani was an eye-opener as we explained what to do if a child cuts themselves to how to react and the procedures to follow in the case of fainting and nose bleeds.

While the teachers gave their ideas on what to do, nobody had it 100% correct but after several first aid lessons, these teachers are now confident they know what to do if a child needs their help. Lessons also involved demonstrating what the teachers can use if they don’t have access to the first aid kit such as how to make slings.

Topics covered include cuts, bruises and grazes, burns, bites, breaks, choking, dizziness and fainting, headaches, nosebleeds and shock.

Waste2Toys Workshop

The teachers had the opportunity to go to the local international school in Zomba city for a course to show the teachers how to make lots of teaching resources and play equipment for young children out of waste material.

They were thought how to make footballs/ tennis balls out of plastic grocery bags, a rope out of grocery bags also and how to play a game called “flick” soccer out of coke bottle tops, magazine/newspaper pages! A couple of other items that were made were plastic spades out of 2l bottles of coke/water, measuring containers, and also playground games of skittles and skipping ropes.

It was a very enjoyable evening and we got a tour of the international school afterwards and were able to ask the teachers there many questions. The teachers at this school have also invited our teachers to come and watch lessons there at any time.
