With a class of 200 children, it’s not an easy task for the teachers to keep the children’s attention, so the first priority to improve the classrooms was to brighten them up to improve the children’s concentration.

The fibre glass roof sheeting was cleaned so that natural light can shine through and the roof was painted white to keep it light. The bottom half of the walls were painted light blue to make the classrooms child friendly, and because the paint is oil based, it is easy to clean. Each window was also painted a bright colour inside and out, making the school a friendly and welcoming environment.

As well as brightening things up with paint, the classrooms also needed repairs. Many of the floors were damaged after many years of use and with little or no maintenance done in the past.

The huge cracks and holes in the floor had to be fixed, walls had big chunks missing meaning lots of cement was needed and some classrooms even needed new window blocks.

Only two classrooms had working locks, some classrooms didn’t have a door and the other where hanging off. To fix this problem we bought new doors and locks, and employed a welder in to fix the door frames.

Each classroom was fitted with lockable storage areas, and we also provided new storage/display areas in the form of three brightly coloured shelves.

Another important thing that was missing was a place to display posters, educational resources and the children’s work.

We decided to go for strong and long lasting notice boards for the walls to make displaying work much easier and secure. Each class received between two and four boards and senior classes welcomed an extra blackboard made from cement, to help making it easier for the teachers to team teach.

One problem we had, which we never expected, was bats – and lots of them.

We tried many different ways of encouraging the bats to find another home so we could fill the holes they were living in but it’s been an ongoing process that’s taken well over two months to fully complete.

Another job that needed to be done was the maintenance of 96 plastic chairs. These were broken, but have now been fixed by a local tradesman and now much stronger and back in use.

We have very recently had an inspection of the school at it was noted how tidy, bright and child friendly the classrooms are now.
